Can’t wait to process the hundreds of photos of Fin Whales we took today.
Oscar from Del Mar Charters took us 15 miles out and we were in a whale playground! At one point we had 6 whales cresting on every side of the boat. When we did start back for shore, the whales even seemed to escort us for a bit. They seemed to love checking us out as much as we enjoyed watching them.
When we lived in Dana Point, California we used to take company out on whale watching tours and rarely saw anything other than an occasional whale in the distance.
We heard whale watching can be good here for a few weeks from mid January to mid March, but everything we heard online said they “had a fun day on the boat, but didn’t see any whales.”
We asked Jessy at the fish market and he recommended Oscar. Turns out Jessy’s sister went to high school with Oscar. Got to love small towns!
It was slightly more than the other whale watching tours, but so worth it. He gets you to the whales and stays for 1 1/2 hours before heading back. It was advertised as a 3 hour tour, possibly more depending on where the whales were. It ended up being 5. The crew took great care of us with free beverages and even supplied blankets for the return trip.
