Elephant Butte

While traveling through New Mexico, we saw that we were just a few miles from their largest State Park, Elephant Butte.

Named after a rock formation resembling an elephant, the park was built around the lake that was created when the Elephant Butte dam was built. Close to the Northern start of the Rio Grande River that stretches all the way to the southern border of Texas.

This park, near the village of Truth or Consequences, is truly an oasis in the middle of a dusty old section of New Mexico where people come from all over to camp on the beach and take their boats and watercraft out on the water.

Though the water level is lower than normal because of the intense drought that has plagued the Western US for many years now, there is still enough for vacationers to enjoy the beach life right in the New Mexican desert.
