I remember the first time I saw the desert. I was almost 30 and flew from Minnesota to Vegas. We took a trip to the Hoover Dam and drove the rental car out from the strip. Being from the climate of the upper Midwest, we were used to grass growing for the short summer months along the roads, not having just brown dirt. Yes, in the winter they were covered with with dirty snow from the road plows, but we knew that green grass was under there. I just could not image anyone living in such a brown world, like the desert. Fast forward to now when hiking in the desert southwest is one of our favorite things to do.
