Little Torch: Ocotillos. These plants are so tall, they captured my curiosity the first time I saw them.

Ocotillos produce these clusters of bright red orange flowers at the tips of their stems, which explain the plant’s name. Ocotillo means “little torch” in Spanish. Plants bloom once in the spring from March through June, in general.

The Ocotillo has adapted to its environment by shedding its small leaves during dry spells. It can also grow new leaves five days after getting rain or water.

Ocotillos have shallow, but wide root system, which helps to gather that precious water.
