So, where the heck is Truth or Consequences, New Mexico? It’s a little city 157 miles south of Albuquerque, and just 38 miles north of Hatch NM, home of the famous green chiles.

Originally named “Hot Springs” because of the natural hot springs that brought a big tourism business with lots of post-WW2 motels.

The city changed its name from Hot Springs to Truth or Consequences as the result of a radio show contest. In March 1950, Ralph Edwards, the host of the popular NBC Radio quiz show Truth or Consequences (and later famous for his TV show of the same name, and This Is Your Life), announced that he would air the program on its 10th anniversary from the first town that renamed itself after the show; Hot Springs officially changed its name on March 31, 1950, and the program was broadcast from there the following evening. Edwards visited the town during the first weekend of May for the next 50 years. Fiesta Days are still held to this day, on this first full weekend in May.

However, these days, T or C is better known as the location of Richard Branson’s Spaceport Welcome Center where people can board a bus to take the 24-mile trek to the Virgin Galactic Spaceport, the World’s First Purpose-Built commercial spaceport, and location of where Branson became the first billionaire in space.
