What makes quiet places so special and unique? Standing in front of the Bowl Lake in Acadia National Park, I felt like I’d stumbled onto Acadia’s secret haven. This little lake in the far corner of the park is a lot more than just a pretty picture. Visiting such a serene place is where the beauty of nature hits the pause button.
The Bowl Lake is one of the places that not everyone finds despite being right off the Bowl trail. It isn’t long but challenging enough to give an impression that something special awaits at the end. I recall being on the Bowl trail, the wind rustling through the trees near the lake, and the beauty of Bowl Lake in Acadia Park unfolding, then I felt the excitement in me because I knew that I was close. By the time I got to this lake, it felt like I was entering a secret world of its own.
Camera in my hand, I managed to look for the right spot to settle beside the water of Bowl Lake. The calm lake perfectly reflected the trees and sky. The quiet surrounded me, broken only by the distant birds chirping. I froze for a minute, admiring everything happening around me. I almost did not take the picture because it felt as if I was intruding into the moment, you know? But, of course, I did, because taking such scenes is the essence of the whole thing.
Bowl Lake isn’t the largest lake or the most visited one in Acadia and it doesn’t have to be. It has this subtle appeal that doesn’t need to shout out loud to be heard. I finished shooting and was on my way back along the trail feeling like I had witnessed something incredible. Even now, as I look at the photo, I feel instantly transported to Bowl Lake’s serene location. I was able to spend some time in a place that few people get to experience. And that is why it stays with me, the memory of visiting Bowl Lake in Acadia National Park.
