Albertsons Stadium at dusk is not just any venue. As I was standing there, the stadium seemed to tell its own story. The field for the Boise State Broncos had the look that begged for attention, just waiting to be photographed.
It was an ordinary day and I was going to Albertsons Stadium in Boise, Idaho. The towering structure sat beneath an endless sky with drifting clouds. I have taken pictures of so many stadiums before but this particular stadium was different. The energy was different; I felt the stadium had a very profound and silent energy.
Albertsons Stadium was not only for epic football matches but is the heart of Boise State University, a symbol of its pride. It is also a symbol of one of Idaho’s greatest entrepreneurs, Joe Albertson, who graduated from Caldwell High School and went on to create the hugely successful Albertson’s supermarket chain, centered right there in Boise, Idaho.
As I prepared my camera, I thought of the thousands of fans, the high energy games, and the memorable moments. Without a game, the stadium was rather quiet, but it said a lot in its silence.
Every move that I made to capture the perfect shot exposed more of its personality. The clean lines of its architecture framed against the sky showed. Albertsons Stadium was more than concrete and steel. It had known the joy of success as well as the pain of failure, but remained unmoved and unaltered, waiting for the next chapter.
Finally, I framed my shot. The delicate layers of clouds in the sky were perfect as it showed the stadium’s strength and stability. And when I pressed the shutter I realized that this was not just another stadium photo. It was dedicated to Albertsons Stadium, a place that had witnessed a lot and stood proud through it all.
At that moment, I realized a stadium doesn’t require a loud audience or a thrilling match to be unique. Its very existence in Boise is enough. Aren’t these places wonderful, even when there’s no one around, they look like they’re waiting for something great to happen?
