Perched on the steep incline of Cleopatra Hill, the Jerome Grand Hotel looms over the quaint, historic town of Jerome, Arizona. This grand structure, originally built in 1927, served as the United Verde Hospital. Its history is as rich as it is chilling, for over its years as a hospital, it’s said that more than 9,000 souls passed away within its walls.
In 1996, this once hospital transformed into the Jerome Grand Hotel, carrying with it whispers of its past. The hotel, shrouded in an aura of mystery, has been a magnet for those intrigued by the paranormal. Guests and staff alike have reported unexplained noises, ghostly apparitions, and an eerie feeling of being watched. The creaking of the old building, the whisper of the wind through its corridors, all contribute to its haunted reputation.
As a photographer, my aim was to capture the essence of this storied place. The Jerome Grand Hotel, with its imposing five-story structure, presents a facade that is both majestic and somewhat foreboding. Its large, weathered windows seem to hold secrets of the past, gazing out over the Verde Valley. The hotel’s exterior, bathed in the golden hues of the setting sun, contrasted sharply with the dark, brooding history hidden within its walls.
The photograph I captured that day was more than just an image of a historic hotel; it was a snapshot of a place where history and mystery intertwine. The Jerome Grand Hotel stands not just as a structure, but as a character in its own right, with stories etched into its very foundation. It’s a place where the past is palpable, and every corner, every hallway seems to hold a story, a whisper of the past.
Capturing the Jerome Grand Hotel in a single frame was like trying to distill the essence of its many tales, both told and untold, into a visual narrative. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting shadows across its facade, the hotel seemed to come alive, as if it were about to reveal its secrets. And there I was, behind my camera, a silent observer to the unfolding drama of history and mystery at the Jerome Grand Hotel.
